On Saturday, Twitter erupted with joy when they thought India had landed their first gold medal.  Lots of people on Twitter put up congratulatory messages for Dipa Karmakar. One user wrote: “India’s first Gold in Gymnastics. Historic..  Another one tweeted: “Congrats #DipaKarmakar on winning gold for #India! First Indian woman to get gold in a global gymnastic competition!”

This was particularly surprising to our sports desk, who informed us that Dipa’s event wasn’t till tomorrow.

The news that everyone has been sharing with joy, is actually a news piece from April 19 when Dipa Karmakar qualified for the Olympics and also clinched gold at the test event of the Rio Games. That’s right a test event.

Perhaps the confusion was caused by the fact that both events occurred in Rio. In that event, Dipa scored 14.833 as her best effort to finish first in the women's vaults finals and win the gold in a rare feat by an Indian gymnast in a global event.

Here’s the complete report.
