What do you do when the referee shows you yellow card in a football match? Normally you say sorry and continue with the game. But not Atiq Rindani of Holy Name High School (Colaba).
When he was shown a yellow for a tackle in his school's MSSA U-16 Division IV game against St Pius (Mulund) on Wednesday, he didn't apologise. Instead, he started dancing in front of the referee and clapped his hands in a mocking gesture. Of course, he was shown the second yellow card and sent off for his action.
"I didn't like the refereeing. He (referee) kept giving biased decisions against us. All of us were frustrated because of that," said Rindani.
The game was important for both the teams, as a win would have guaranteed progress to the knock out stages. St Pius were leading 2-0 and looked assured of a victory, but the team from Colaba were not done. Channelising their frustration with the referee to their game, they fought back, scoring two goals in four minutes draw the game 2-2.
But their celebration too was controversial. Both the goalscores for Holy Name, Swapnil Wagh and Aman Chauan, decided to remove their jersey while celebrating their respective goals. When they equalised, even the players on the bench removed their jerseys. The referee had no option but to show a yellow card to the players on the field. In total, five players of Holy Name were shown yellow cards.
Their coach Diago D'souza said, "The referee awarded a penalty to them (St Pius) in the first half, which I don't think was warranted. He was poor throughout the game. I'm just happy that my boys fought back."
On his team getting yellow cards, he said, "I didn't expect them to celebrate in such a fashion. I'll talk to them and ensure it doesn't happen in the future."
At four points and with a game in hand, both teams are almost through to the next round.
