Mumbai on Wednesday touched a new low as they were bundled out for 44, their second lowest innings total in the history of Ranji Trophy , in the semifinal against Karnataka, that saw a staggering 21 wickets fall, on the first day.

Pace spearhead R Vinay Kumar bagged six wickets to help Karnataka skittle out the 40-time winners for a paltry total at the M Chinnaswamy stadium.

Abhishek Nayar did not come into bat as he underwent medical treatment after suffering an injury during Karnataka's first innings.  At stumps, Karnataka were struggling at 10 for two in their second innings, with a lead of 168 runs and eight wickets in hands. The hosts had made 202 in their first innings, before Vinay Kumar (6/20) performed the demolition act.

When stumps were drawn, night-watchman Abhimanyu Mithun was on 4, while Ravi Kumar Samarth was yet to open his account.  Uthappa and K L Rahul made four and two respectively, before they were picked by Shardul Thakur and Balwinder Singh Sandhu.

Ranji Trophy: Mumbai to take on holders Karnataka in semis

Opting to bat, Karnataka made 202 in their first innings, with Robin Uthappa top-scoring with 68 and was ably supported by Manish Pandey (34), as the duo stitched a crucial 81-run partnership for the third wicket. Earlier the hosts were in trouble at 34 for two. Resurgent Mumbai bettered its previous low score of 42 all out against Gujarat in the 1977-78 Ranji Trophy season.

Mumbai's batsmen were tormented by Karnataka's bowlers, as six of their batsmen got out without opening their account. Only two players - Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav - reached double digits. Kumar ran in hard and wreaked havoc by picking up back-to-back wickets on two occasions.

Kumar drew first blood when he got opener Akhil Herwadkar trapped leg before for zero in the very second ball and soon Mithun (1-23) trapped Iyer for 15.

Thereafter, the next five wickets were picked up by Kumar, who took great delight in sending back Aditya Tare (9), Yadav (12) and S D Lad for nought.
