The debate intensifies about whether films should be made on the lives of cricketers as the release date of Mahendra Singh Dhoni's biopic draws close. Earlier, opening batsman Gautam Gambhir had said that he wasn't too pleased with the idea of making films on the lives of cricketers but his former teammate Suresh Raina took an exact opposite stand by saying that these movies can be helpful in inspiring the common people to do something for themselves and the nation.

Gambhir, who was recently ignored for India's Test series against New Zealand after an impressive run in the Duleep Trophy, took to Twitter to say, "I don't believe in biopics on cricketers. I think those people who have contributed more to the country than the cricketers deserve a biopic. There are lots of people in the country who have done so many noble deeds for the nation. Therefore, biopics should be made on their lives."

He then brought up the Uri attack issue and urged filmmakers to portray the lives of the martyrs on silver screen instead of revisiting the journey of the cricketers:

A lot of Dhoni fans were left fuming by this statement of the Delhi batsman and criticised him on social media, reacting to which Gambhir clarified, "My detractors got it wrong. Am not against ANY ONE cricketer's biopic, am against d very concept which includes a biopic on my life."

However, Raina is of the opinion that the struggles which helped a Sachin or a Dhoni to become the legends that they are today, should be portrayed on big screen for the people. “You never know the true story of why someone like Tendulkar or Dhoni became a cricketer. They too were simple just like anyone else, but they did something that made them famous. When a biopic gets made on the life of a cricketer, people get to know the struggles they went through to become icons of the country and the sport,” the aggressive batsman was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

The Uttar Pradesh batsman further added that stories of hardships are needed to be unraveled so that the general public can draw inspiration from those. “No one knows the complete truth. Based on the interviews or whatever comes on the television you only know about someone’s life in bits and pieces. With a biopic, a fan will know what goes behind the scenes and get inspired to do something for themselves and the country," Raina added.

Here's a look at the trailer of M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story

Incidentally, the biopics that have been made on the lives of cricketers include Azhar, (based on former Indian skipper, Mohammad Azharuddin's life) and Hansie: A True Story (based on the life story of late South African captain Hansie Cronje). Sachin: A Billion Dreams is a biographical film on Sachin Tendulkar which is currently under production. M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story starring actor Sushant Singh Rajput will release on September 30, 2016.
