A new study released by Tennis Australia revealed that only 2% of professional tennis players make profits from tournament prize money.

The International Tennis Federation Review, which was compiled by Tennis Australia with the help of Victoria University and Kingston University, disclosed that majority of professional players were unable to earn profits on account of having to pay on average more than US $130,000 per year for travel costs, accommodation, equipment and coaching.

Victoria University data analyst Michael Bane said that though there was actually a lot of money in tennis, totaling US $162 million for the men and US $120 million for the women, what makes it so difficult for developing athletes was the way it was distributed, China Daily reported.

Around US $97 million have been shared between the top 50 men, with the rest being distributed amongst everyone else, he added.
