Tuesday marked the 18th anniversary of Anil Kumble’s ‘Perfect 10’. It was on February 7, 1999, that he became only the second bowler in Test history to take all 10 wickets in an innings – 10/74 – against Pakistan at his favourite venue, Feroz Shah Kotla in New Delhi.

Reflecting on that feat, Kumble said on Tuesday that “it was one of those things”. “I don’t think I ever thought 18 years ago when I sat in the dressing room going out to bowl that I will pick up 10 wickets. It is one of those thing that happens. It is nice to celebrate anniversaries of cricketing milestones as well,” the 46-year-old former leg-spinner said.

Asked if he thought anyone from his current team could repeat that feat, Kumble said: “If it happens, it happens. It can happen tomorrow or 10 years down the line or may not happen at all. I don’t think anybody gave me a chance to pick up 10 wickets. It is a very rare occurrence and I was privileged and blessed to be a part of that. It is something very unique. I am glad people remember anniversaries and we also celebrate cricketing anniversaries. It is very rare. It could happen tomorrow as well."
