Parupalli Kashyap's woeful run in international tournaments continued when he exited in the men's singles first round of the All England Badminton Championships in Birmingham on Wednesday.The 27-year-old gave glimpse of an upset win when he won the opening game against Japan's Kenichi Tago. However, the world No. 5 pulled all the aces to defeat the Indian world No. 18 14-21 21-19 21-17 in an hour and 15 minutes.Kashyap, who had entered the quarterfinal in last year's edition, has battled injuries and form since his loss in the last-eight round of the World Championships last August.
Last week, he lost to fellow Indian HS Prannoy in the second round of the German Open Grand Prix. Kashyap had the advantage till the first half of the second game when he led Tago 10-7 and 11-8. However, as has been his bane, he lost the advantage and went down fighting 19-21. Tago seized the initiative in the decider and led from the start to show the India the exit door.Indian shuttlers are searching for their first win in the competition since the qualifying rounds began on Tuesday. Saina Nehwal, seeded seventh, was scheduled to take on Scot Kirsty Gilmour at the time of going to press while PV Sindhu was slated to take on Chinese Sun Yu.
In another men's singles first round, K Srikanth, ranked 21st, went down tamely to world No. 15 Kento Momota of Japan 11-21 15-21 in 33 minutes.Also losing their first round matches were the mixed doubles pair of Ashwini Ponappa and Tarun Kona, who lost to fourth seed Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen of Denmark 13-21 16-21 in 31 minutes.
