Players from north-east excel at National Games in Kerala

The players from the north-east performed outstandingly and brought laurels to their respective states in the recently concluded 2015 National Games in Kerala.

The players from the north-east performed outstandingly and brought laurels to their respective states in the recently concluded 2015 National Games in Kerala.

Over 11,000 sportspersons participated in 36 disciplines during the 35th National Games, which was held between January 31 and February 14 across seven districts in Kerala.

Kerala remained on top in medal tally at the event as the state bagged 162 medals, which included 54 gold medals.

Manipur was seventh in the medal tally with 69 medals, while Assam won 25 medals. The other states such as Tripura won five medals, Mizoram bagged six medals, Arunachal Pradesh won four and Meghalaya won three medals respectively.

On the last day of the Games, the players from Manipur bagged four gold medals, three silvers and three bronze medals respectively in Wushu, Taekwondo, Fencing, Boxing, Cycling and Canoeing and Kayaking.

In Judo, Likmabam Sushila of Manipur clinched the gold medal in women's below 48kg category whereas M. Thomas Meitei won the gold in medal in Boxing.

W. Tomba Singh, a player from Meghalaya, said that he would try his best to win a gold medal next time although he failed this time.

"For the first time I am playing in the National Games and I got a silver medal. I was trying my best to get gold medal but I made some mistakes. So, this time I didn't get but next time I will do my best to get the gold medal," he said.

Meanwhile, Vishal, a player from Assam, thanked the locals for their support throughout the National Games.

The players from the north-east region have time and again proven their mettle at various national and international level competitions, especially in sports like Weightlifting, Boxing, Judo and Football.
