The dispute between the Mumbai School Sports Association (MSSA) and Rizvi Springfield (Bandra) regarding an overage player in the Harris Shield cricket tournament appears to be reaching a conclusion with the of hearing set on January 6.

Last week, MSSA banned the boy for three years (2014-2015, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 seasons) and the school from playing in the current season after receiving a complaint from a parent of a child belonging to another school.

The parent, through an RTI plea, found out that the Rizvi player's date of birth in the school's records was 18-03-1998. However, the player's DOB in the list submitted by Rizvi to MSSA was 18-11-1999. This also led to the holding up of semifinals of the Elite division between Rizvi and Don Bosco (Matunga).

"The hearing will be held on Tuesday at the MSSA office. We are giving Rizvi a chance to defend themselves. We have sent them a letter asking them to present their case before us. The law will take its due course," said an MSSA official on condition on anonymity.

Rizvi said they believe that they will come clean because they were unaware of the student's 'original' birth certificate in his previous school (Shailendra Education Society, Dahisar).

School coach Raju Pathak said, "We don't know what could be the outcome of the hearing on Tuesday, but we will tell them (MSSA) what we've being telling everyone for the past two weeks, that we had absolutely no idea about the boy's previous birth certificate. Why should the school be punished for that."

Assistant coach of the school Salil Desai said, "We are still confident of playing the semifinals. It looks like it could be held next week since the dates for the finals have already been decided on Jan 13-16 at Brabourne."
