Over 1 million South Korean fans sign petition demanding inquiry into 'shock loss' at Sochi figure skating

More than 1.5 million South Koreans have reportedly signed a petition demanding an inquiry into the shock defeat of their country's figure skater Yuna Kim at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Despite a flawless performance, Kim failed in her bid to become only the third woman to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in figure skating and had to settle for a silver after the scores had been tallied by the sport's opaque and controversial scoring system.

According to The Guardian, the favourite Kim lost out by 5.48 points to the unfancied Russian athlete Adeline Sotnikova, who won her country's first women's Olympic figure skating gold.

However, South Korean skating fans immediately cried foul play, saying that 'Queen Yuna' had been denied the gold that was rightfully hers and questioned the judging and looming presence of the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin.

The report mentioned that more than 1.5 million of South Korean fans had signed an online petition demanding an inquiry into Kim's shock defeat, adding that the petition could end up breaking Change.org records.

The South Korean media also cried 'foul' over Kim's defeat, saying that she had been denied the chance to join Germany's Katarina Witt and Norway's Sonja Henie as the only women to win successive Olympic figure skating golds by partisan judging and an 'extra judge' in the form of Putin, the report added.
