The world’s biggest football match – Barcelona VS Real Madrid – or as they call it El Classico, might be a thing of the past if Catalonia gains independence from Spain.

On Sunday, separatists – people who want Catalonia divided from Spain – won a clear majority in Catalonia’s parliament which sets them up for a collision course with Spain’s central government over independence.

Acting regional government head Artur Mas told supporters: “Catalans have voted yes to independence”, as the secessionist parties secured 72 out of 135 seats in the election.

While the Spanish government remains opposed to separation, calling the plan ‘a nonsense’ , and the Spanish constitution doesn’t allow separation, the Junts pel Si (Together for Yes) party claims that this is a ‘democratic mandate’ which will allow them to move forward for independence.

However, the tricky part is that if this does happen, then Barcelona FC and other clubs based in the Catalan region will no longer be able to participate in La Liga. Noth, Spanish league president Javier Tebas and Spain’s sports minister Miguel Cardenal, believe that independence will mean that Barcelona will no longer be part of La Liga. The Spanish league president had tweeted: “If Spain splits, so too does La Liga. Let's hope we never reach that absurd situation.”

Last week sports minister Cardenal had said: “FC Barcelona would be unable to carry on competing in the Spanish league. It's absurd to think that if Catalonia becomes independent, the club could ask to be registered by the Spanish federation.”

He added: “The sporting aspiration of the Catalan clubs would be different. Barca, for example, would be a team like Ajax, Celtic or Standard Liege and would be doing well to get to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. It is not an argument based on scaremongering but on reality.”
