All-rounder Colin de Grandhomme took six for 41 in the best haul for a New Zealand cricketer on debut as the hosts dismissed Pakistan for 133 before tea on the second day of the first test at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Friday.

The 30-year-old seamer, a surprise selection in the squad, also became the eighth New Zealander to take a five-wicket haul on debut. New Zealand openers Tom Latham and Jeet Raval, who is also on debut, will begin New Zealand's reply after tea was taken early.

De Grandhomme repaid the selectors' faith with a nagging line and length and did just enough off the pitch and through the air to create doubt for Pakistan's batsmen. The visitors had resumed after lunch on 88 for four with Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq on 15 with Asad Shafiq on 16.

They failed to add to that score when De Grandhomme took his fourth wicket, Shafiq caught at second slip by Raval, his third catch of the innings. Misbah and the aggressive Safraz Ahmed took the score past 100 before Tim Southee had the wicketkeeper caught in the gully for seven, before Trent Boult bowled Mohammad Amir for three.

De Grandhomme completed his five-wicket haul when he had Sohail Khan caught at short midwicket before Misbah's resistance of 108 balls ended on 31 when caught at mid-off by Kane Williamson off Boult. The Auckland all-rounder then wrapped up the innings when Rahat Ali nicked behind to wicketkeeper BJ Watling for a five-ball duck.

Thursday's opening day was washed out and Williamson wasted little time in asking the visitors to bat on a green wicket after he won the toss. Pakistan's openers Azhar Ali and Sami Aslam saw off the new ball attack of Southee and Boult with relative ease until Williamson introduced De Grandhomme in the ninth over.

The gamble paid off with the seamer taking three wickets before the break as he bowled Ali for 15 and had Babar Azam (7) and Younus Khan (2) caught behind. Southee took the other wicket in the first session when Aslam was caught by Raval at second slip for 19.
