New Zealand discard Jesse Ryder smashed 136 from 57 balls against Ireland XI for Otago on Thursday to press his case for an international recall. Otago took on the visitors in a One-Dayer at Lincoln on the South Island.
He reached a century off just 39 balls and hit eight sixes and 18 fours overall, before being dismissed. Otago won by three wickets.
Ryder was dropped from the New Zealand side in February after a late-night drinking session, the latest in a series of off-field indiscretions. New Zealand coach Mike Hesson indicated this month that Ryder’s international career was not necessarily over but "he’s got a lot of ground to make up".
The Blacks Caps are struggling to find a winning one-day opening batting partnership ahead of the World Cup in Australia. Ryder minus his off-field issues may be a solution to the problem. Meanwhile, South Africa cruised to a six-wicket win over New Zealand in the first one-day international on Tuesday.
