Kings XI Punjab captain Adam Gilchrist has thrown his weight behind the beleaguered Praveen Kumar. The India discard was recently involved in an on-field bust-up during a Corporate Trophy match and the BCCI barred him from taking part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

When asked if he had trouble dealing with the mercurial bowler from Uttar Pradesh, Gilchrist said, “No. not at all. Personally, I have never had any trouble with Praveen as a person, as a friend or in a professional set-up as a as captain and coach. Look, every player has different qualities and different characteristics in his make-up. But I have never had issues with him. He’s a passionate and really committed player on the field and that’s what you want. I hope he comes out of this well.”

The Aussie great also spoke about the team’s decision to buy Punjab bowler Manpreet Singh Gony at the recent auction. “We just wanted to bolster, to add some value, to our Indian domestic seam bowling area (attack). We have the likes of Praveen, Parvinder Awana and a few others. So Manpreet gives us another option; he’s a local (Chandigarh) boy and has some IPL experience. We are thrilled and happy to have him at Kings XI,” Gilchrist said.
