The Premier Futsal promised an entertaining, pacy, exciting and an edge of the seat football. And it delivered the same when it mattered most as the final turned out to be one of the most exciting encounters of the inaugural edition of the tournament.
It was Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs's Mumbai 5 that tasted victory beating Michel Salgado's Kochi 5 in penalties in a thrilling final played at the Peddem Indoor Stadium, Mapusa, on Sunday.
After being level 1-1 in the regulation time of 40 minutes, Mumbai got the better in the tie breaker ending with the final score of 4-3 (3-2 tie breaker).
Mumbai's Angellot leveled in the penultimate minute of the game after Dievis Moares eight minute strike gave Kochi the lead.
However, it was goalkeeper Luis Amado's brilliant and brave effort that sealed the deal for the winners scoring in the penalties before saving his counterpart Casalone's powerful strike.
Meanwhile, big shots Giggs and Salgado failed to impress in the penalties. While Giggs could not hit beyond the goalkeeper, Salgado's shot few past way over the goalpost.
Before Amado's strike at the end, Perez and Angellot managed to keep Mumbai in the hunt. For Kochi, Gekabert's calm effort to find the net and Chaguinha powerful strike that went past Amado could not save the team in the tie breakers.
Earlier, a passionate crowd chanted 'Mumbaaiiii Mumbaaiiii' all the while, but it was Kochi that dominated the whole show. Right from the beginning, when Moares gave them the lead in the eighth minute. A beautiful cross from Chaguinha from the right saw Moares give a deft touch into the net leaving Amado a mere spectator.
From then, it was Kochi who was all over Mumbai. Salgado's side may have not scored a lot of goals but created many chances unlike Mumbai that struggled to even get past a strong defense.
As the game progressed Mumbai's game did not get better and found it difficult to break the defence. However, it was a minute before the final whistle that Angellot came up with a miraculous goal that saw them head into the tie-breaker.
Mumbai's local player Chanpreet was excited with the maiden win. "The feeling is definitely good. It was first the futsal tournament which was won by Mumbai. We have made history. Giggs was very supportive and told us to keep going," said Chanpreet.
