Army runners will dominate the Indian charge in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon (SCMM) this Sunday, but Sanvaroo Yadav is the favourite, according to coach of Army and Services, KS Mathew.
Though Ram Singh Yadav, the current course record holder of the SCMM with a timing of 2:16:59, is also participating in the event, a few niggles developed while training and it takes away his ‘favourite’ tag.
“Sanvaroo comes fresh from winning the Vasai Mayor’s Marathon in October last year. He has been training hard alongwith Ram Singh. The thing with Sanvaroo is that he’s very dangerous after 30kms. The way he pushes in the last kilometer is just amazing,” said Mathew.
Ram Singh, who achieved a personal best here at the SCMM 12 to qualify for the London Olympics said, “I will try my best, but would cherish it if someone breaks my course record and takes away the bonus of Rs 1 lakh.”
“Whenever I compete in any marathon, my only goal is to break the national record of Shivnath Singh which is 2:12:00,” said Yadav.
With the national marathon — Mawana Sugars Indian Open Marathon (Feb. 23)— cancelled, the top Indian runners in the full marathon category have assembled here in large numbers treating it as the national championship.
The other prominent men runners are Binning Lyngkhoi, Elam Singh, Karan Singh, Budha Ram and Rashpal Singh. Satya Prakash who won the Kolkata Marathon on January 5. Satya Prakash who won the Kolkata Marathon on January 5 and Gajilal Patle who finished second there will run their second marathon in 14 days.
