Thousands of people in Malad and Kandivli, hoping for the development of housing projects situated around army land, have been left disappointed by the attitude of the ministry of defence (MoD). The MoD has issued a circular clearing development of only those projects which were approved between 2010 and 2011 by BMC.

If the circular had approved redevelopment of all the projects, it could have benefited over 20,000 families.

Undeterred, the local parliamentarians Kirit Somaiya and Gopal Shetty have resolved to keep pursuing the matter.

In 2011, the defence Ministry stopped all development around 500 metres of the defence land, which comprises areas from Malad to Kandivali up to Thakur Complex and Thakur Village. At least 650 building projects were stalled, including 70-odd buildings which were given to builders for redevelopment.

While a few buildings have been demolished, leaving no scope for occupants to return, several buildings are dilapidated and have been termed by civic authorities as dangerous to reside in. Those residents are lucky who are being paid rents by the builders, while others are burning holes in their pockets.

Hundreds of residents had carried out a candle-light march in December 10, last year.

Kamlesh Nayak, a resident of the Ashok Nagar in Kandivali East said, "Now residents are restless as they want to be in their own homes. The new circular is a disappointment."

Dhiren Shelat, Malad resident, whose building Ajitnath Nagar on S V Road is under redevelopment, said that they had got permission to build up to plinth level. Since then their project is at a standstill. "Those who have purchased the flats years ago with their savings thought that they would get new and spacious houses after redevelopment. But with the union government issuing new GR, their dreams are shattered. The senior citizens are in shock. People have to shift from one rented flat to other every eleven months like wanderers," Shelat said.
