On Sunday, Marouane Fellaini  pulled off a first by becoming the first Muslim to captain Manchester United. With Carrick and Rooney out of the team, Fellaini, one of the most vilified players in the current United squad was picked by Jose Mourinho to lead the Red Devils against Sunderland.

Felliani, known for his trademark Afro and  preferring his elbows to  his feet, is of Moroccan heritage and a practicing Muslim.

Fellaini  is not the only Muslim player in the squad and the world’s most expensive player – Paul Pogba, is also a practicing Muslim. Sadio Mane (Liverpool), Granit Xhaka (Arsenal), Mesut Ozil (Arsenal), Islam Slimani (Leicester City), Ahmed Musa (Leicester City), Yaya Toure (Manchester City) and Mesut Ozil (Arsenal) are some of the prominent Muslim players in the Premier League.

Last year’s  PFA Player of the Year, Riyad Mahrez is also a practicing Muslim.
