Manoj Tiwary scored an unbeaten century and Laxmi Ratan Shukla hit a breezy 54 as East Zone were bowled out for 278 on Day One of their Duleep Trophy quarterfinal tie against West Zone in Rohtak on Wednesday.

Mumbai seamer Dhawal Kulkarni picked up three wickets, while Shrikant Mundhe and Yusuf Pathan accounted for two each as East Zone lasted 75 overs at the Bansi Lal Stadium. When stumps were drawn, West Zone were10/0 in eight overs.

Kulkarni claimed Rameez Nemat in the third over a 54-run stand between Natraj Behera and Sudip Chatterjee helped East Zone. That's when off-spinner Pathan stepped in and dismissed both.

Tiwary, who walked in at No. 4, also saw Saurabh Tiwary and Wriddhiman Saha depart. At 116/5, he joined hands with Bengal teammate Shukla. Aggressive from the word go, the duo added 69 runs in only 50 balls. It was Shukla who stole the show with a 31-ball 54, inclusive of six fours and three sixes. But once Mundhe had him leg-before, Tiwary took over. Batting with the tail-enders, he took East Zone past the 250-run mark and beyond.
In all, he made 100 not out off 140 balls, with struck four fours and six sixes to boot.
