Two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova cruised into the Madrid Open final after claiming a comfortable straight sets win over world number one Serena Williams.

The Czech took only 73 minutes to trounce Serena 6-2, 6-3 and in the process brought an end to the American's long unbeaten run, which stood at 27 before the defeat.

In the light of her performance, Serena said that she was just exhausted then, but insisted that it was a really good preparation for the upcoming French Open, the BBC reported.

Kvitova will next square off against Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat reigning champion Maria Sharapova, in the final on Saturday.
