The FA Cup victory over Crystal Palace would have been some kind of silver lining for Manchester United after a torrid season. But that didn't seem to be enough to keep LVG at the helm as he was sacked by United just two days after the win.

A Poor run in the Premier League, being ousted from Champions League and Europa League eventually had already put a lot of pressure on Van Gaal and the club officials to sack him. However, Van Gaal could only resist until the season end and was eventually handed the axe.

Mourinho's arrival in London prior to Van Gaal's sacking just increased all the speculations. To add to that, Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes met United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in London on Tuesday to finalise the deal.

Mourinho's and Manchester United's former star Cristiano Ronaldo could not hide his excitement either.

Ronaldo said in an interview to the La Sexta TV station in Spain and quoted in The Sun: "He's already signed, hasn't he? I think it's good. If it's something United wanted I think it's good. I hope Manchester United get back to being what they were because it's an impressive club but in the last years they lacked an identity a bit. And it hurts me seeing United like that because it's a club that I carry in my heart. I wish Mourinho can carry them back to the top."

Although Ronaldo was all praise for his former boss and team, the Real Madrid talisman put rest to all transfer rumours claiming that he will retire at Real Madrid.

Mourinho is closing in on a deal to become the new manager at United and Press Association Sport understands talks continue with intricacies such as image rights believed to be being worked on.
