The Kanga League ‘G’ division encounter between United Cricket Club and Sportsfield Cricket Club at Sydenham College ground, Oval Maidan, on Sunday, had to be abandoned after locals intruded the playing area. Sportsfield were 110/8 at tea when locals demanded that they play tennis ball cricket at the venue. As a result, each of the teams earned a solitary point.
Shekhar Shetty, coach of United Cricket Club felt that the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) should be more firm and should ensure no further repetition of such instances. “We need better umpires who are well equipped to take control of the situation. The MCA should switch the venue if they are well aware of such problems at the ground.”
Nadeem Memon, ground secretary of the MCA, spoke about the gravity of the situation and felt a solution would be reached soon. “The matches initially used to end at 4.30pm with the locals playing afterwards but with these matches now ending at 5.20pm, the locals feel angry as they feel we’re intruding into their playing time. Also, with the sun set soon approaching, these locals don’t get more than an hour to play. This being a public ground plus the locals being free only on Sundays, we cannot forget to take them into consideration. Hence, we shall propose a change in timings in the next meeting. We want the best for everybody.”
