Formula One Champion Lewis Hamilton has revealed that he was feeling "great" about going into "one of his favourite races of the year", the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, with an agreement to stay at Mercedes for another three years.

The 30-year-old writes in his column that re-signing for Mercedes is what he always intended to do, and there was never really a doubt in his mind that he would not, the BBC has reported.

The 2008 and 2014 Formula One World Champion, whose previous contract did not run out until the end of this season, added that although they intended to start talking about a new one in the middle of 2014, in the end they did not get around to sitting down until February 2015.

Hamilton, who tweeted the picture of him signing his new contract before the Monaco Grand Prix, said that by the end of this new contract, which runs until the end of 2018, he will have been with Mercedes for more than 20 years, if the time spent at McLaren before Formula 1 and in F1 is taken into account.

He noted that he enjoyed his time at Mercedes so much so it was 1,000% in his mind that this is where he wanted to be, provided they could come to an agreement.
