League Cup Final Preview: A repeat of the 2008 final

The finals of the League Cup is the match that awaits us this Sunday, as Chelsea look forward to a well contested final against a resurgent Spurs side. But this isn't the first time these two sides meet in this fixture, as Chelsea locked horns with Tottenham Hotspur in the 2008 League Cup final that saw Spurs win after extra time thanks to a 94th minute header by Jonathan Woodgate. Incidentally, that match was the first match to be played in the New Wembley stadium, which also happens to be the venue for Sunday's final. So its needless to say that Chelsea will be going into this match with revenge on their minds.

History suggests that Chelsea have a decent record in the Finals of the League Cup, winning four out of seven finals and they will be looking to add to their record, come Sunday. Chelsea had an incredible start to the 2014-15 season, but a recent drop in form saw them draw against PSG in the Champions League and also against Premier League strugglers Burnley at home. But Chelsea will look to put all of that aside, as they look to win their first piece of silverware this season. Chelsea are the current leaders in the Premier League table, five points ahead of their closest rivals Manchester City. A win on Sunday will give them huge motivation to go ahead and win the Premier League and achieve their first domestic League and Cup double since their Premier League and FA Cup double in May 2010. They will also be looking to set the record straight against Spurs, having already lost a League Cup final in 2008.

Spurs on the other hand will be wary of their opponents, as stats suggest that Chelsea have a better head to head record against them in all competitions, with 64 wins over 50 losses. But Tottenham can draw inspiration from their League Cup triumph in 2008 against the same opposition that saw them win 2-1, after extra time. Spurs haven't had a great season in the Premier League, lying seventh in the table but they will be all guns blazing as Sunday's final offers them their only chance of silverware this season, as they were eliminated from the Europa League by Fiorentina in their last 32 clash on Wednesday. Harry Kane will be Tottenham's star man as he will look to continue his goalscoring form that has seen him score 22 goals for Spurs in all competitions.

This fixture is a rivalry that dates back to the 1967 FA Cup final, that saw Spurs win with a scoreline of 2-1 against their London rivals. The most recent match between these two sides saw Spurs beat Chelsea with a scoreline of 5-3 in the Premier League, but the last time these two sides met at Wembley Stadium saw Chelsea beat Spurs to a scoreline of 5-1 in the semi-final of the 2012 FA Cup.

So its all to play for, as both teams will be looking to earn bragging rights over their city rivals by winning on Sunday. Chelsea and Tottenham have an equal share of 4 League Cups each and both teams will be looking to add to that list. Its West London versus North London and yet another intriguing League Cup final awaits us. Who will be the 2015 League Cup winners, will it be Jose Mourinho's Chelsea or will it be Pochettino's Spurs?
