Former India and Tamil Nadu pace Lakshmipathy Balaji has decided to hang up his boots. Balaji best known for his exploits during the historic 2004 test series in Pakistan was the spearhead of Tamil Nadu's bowling unit for many years. He announced his retirement on Thursday from first class cricket. However, Balaji will continue to be available for selection in T-20 leagues.

Balaji told Wisden India, “I have decided to move on, it’s the right time. But it’s not a complete (retirement) announcement. I’ll continue to play T20s in tournaments like the TNPL.”

The 34-year-olld Balaji took 330 wickets from 106 first-class matches. In his List A career, he took 145 wickets in 100 matches. His international career was often impeded by injuries. He played 8 tests (27 wickets), 30 ODIs (34 wickets) and 5 T-20 (10 wickets) matches for India. Balaji instantly connected with Pakistanis during the 2004 tour. His smile won the hearts of Pakistanis and on the pitch he took 12 wickets in a series that India won 2-1, a series that earned him the moniker 'Smiling Assasin'. Sadly, his inconsistent form and injuries meant Balaji was out of favour from the Indian team even after some impressive performances.  He made a comeback in Indian team in the T-20 format during 2011 and last represented India against South Africa at Colombo, in 2012.

Balaji said that he is thankful to the Tamil Nadu Cricket Board for their support and mentioned the likes of Zaheer Khan for giving him tips during crucial moments. He also had a successful IPL stint playing for top sides like CSK and KKR. He later represented KXIP.  Balaji has taken coaching stints in the past and cricket lovers will be eager to see him being associated with cricket in one form or other in the future.
