Out-of-favour batsman Kevin Pietersen has expressed that Andrew Strauss, if he is made the England and Wales Cricket Board's new director, should restore public confidence in England cricket after a 'treacherous 15 months'.

Strauss, the former Test captain, has been tipped to replace former England wicketkeeper Paul Downton, who was sacked from the post of managing director last month.

Pietersen said that he hoped Strauss and the ECB bring the public back to the team after a treacherous 15 months, adding that the former captain had some 'huge' decisions to make, Sport24 reported.

Pietersen has been out of the national squad since his central contract was cancelled 14 months ago by the ECB following the team's Ashes washout by Australia.

The maverick batsman turned down a lucrative Indian Premier League contract with the Sunrisers Hyderabad team to concentrate on his county campaign with Surrey, in a bid to earn an England comeback.

Earlier, incoming ECB chairman Colin Graves had stated that Pietersen could earn a recall to the national side again if he made enough runs in county cricket.
