Axed England star Kevin Pietersen missed out on the start of day four of Surrey's County match against Leicestershire thanks to a calf injury.

Pietersen went to hospital for a scan, as this injury comes a day after being snubbed for the England side for this summer's Ashes. Despite a career best unbeaten 355 in the first innings of the county game, Pietersen was ignored for England's upcoming series against old enemy Australia.

He instead has chosen to focus now on IPL 8 for which he will play for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He also has committments for St Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean Premier League T20 tournament in June and July. He returned to the Oval at lunch-time, just before Surrey started their second innings.

Pietersen has been involved in spats with new England Cricket Director Andrew Strauss and ECB CEO Tom Harrison over the duo's decision to exclude him from England's plans for the upcoing summer.
