Kei Nishikori becomes first Japanese to reach Grand Slam semis post Stanislas Wawrinka win

Kei Nishikori fought hard to beat third seed Stanislas Wawrinka 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), 6-7 (5), 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the US Open and become the first Japanese man in 81 years to reach a Grand Slam semifinal.

Two days after needing fours hours and 19 minutes to get by Canadian Milos Raonic in the tournament's longest match, Nishikori had enough left in the tank to edge Australian Open champion Wawrinka in a four hours and 15 minute test of wills.

With the victory Nishikori became the first Japanese man to reach the last four of a grand slam since Jiro Satoh at Wimbledon in 1933, The Guardian reported.

Nishikori said that he does not know how he finished the game, but added that he is happy.

Nishikori, who had a medical timeout in the third set to have his right foot taped, also said that he feels amazing and is very happy to reach his first time semis. He is hoping to recover again and play 100 percent tennis in the next round.

Nishikori will next face top-seeded Wimbledon champion Serbia's Novak Djokovic, who defeated eighth-seeded Scotsman Andy Murray 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (1-7), 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, in the US Open semifinal, the report added.
