Riding on Shreyas Gopal's maiden hat-trick (5/35) and captain R Vinay Kumar's (4/70) vicious swing, Karnataka bundled Rest of India (RoI) for 183 and clinched the Irani Cup to end their glorious domestic outing this season at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Wednesday. This was their eighth win in nine matches this season.
Karnataka is also the first Ranji champion to win the Irani Cup after nine years.
Kumar – who bagged six wickets in the first innings – registered his fourth first-class 10-wicket haul. He clean-bowled Dinesh Karthik and trapped Mandeep Singh leg-before in the same over.
Gopal picked up Baba Aparajith (caught by Stuart Binny at long-off) and cleaned up tailenders Ashok Dinda and Pankaj Singh to complete his hat-trick.
On the win, Kumar said: "We have been waiting for 15 years as a team and I, for 10 years to play for Karnataka in the Irani Cup. It's been a great experience to lead a such wonderful bunch of players."
RoI coach Lalchand Rajput said, "I think it's extremely disappointing because RoI had players who have performed well in the Ranji Trophy and players who are aiming to play for the country."
Brief Scores: RoI 201 & 183 all out in 65.4 overs (B Aparajith 66; S Gopal 5/35, R Vinay Kumar 4/70) lost to Karnataka 606 all out by an innings and 222 runs
