Juventus sold Brazilian playmaker Diego to VfL Wolfsburg on Friday for 15.5 million euros ($19.7 million), almost 10 million euros less than they paid for him last year.

Wolfsburg said the player's contract would run until 2014.

"Juventus announce that an agreement has been finalised with VfL Wolfsburg for the sale of Diego for 15.5 million euros," a Juve statement said.

The 25-year-old signed from Werder Bremen for 24.5 million euros and failed to shine in his one campaign in Turin but had looked central to new coach Luigi Del Neri's plans earlier this pre-season.

However Juve, who have made seven major signings after finishing seventh in Serie A last term, have opted to cash in and now look to have lined up Napoli striker Fabio Quagliarella as the August transfer window ticks down.

Udinese forward Antonio Di Natale snubbed a move to Juve so attention quickly turned to Naples-born Quagliarella, one of the few Italy players to come out of a dismal World Cup with credit.

He was left out of Napoli's Europa League game with Elfsborg on Thursday and told fans afterwards: "Sometimes you have to think with your head not your heart."

Media reports have also said Juve are close to selling forward David Trezeguet ahead of the Serie A kickoff this weekend.

Wolfsburg, the 2008-09 Bundesliga champions, have also been busy rebuilding under new coach Steve McClaren having limped in eighth last season.
