In the era of trigger-happy owners and clubs, it was almost inevitable that Jose Mourinho would get sacked by performances that left Chelsea hovering over the relegation zone.  If this was any other manager, Roman probably would’ve pulled the trigger much earlier but this was Chelsea’s prodigal son but sadly he became just another footnote in Roman’s era.

The Chelsea owner has sacked eight managers during his tenure, as he keeps on searching for some elusive manager who will take Chelsea to the Promised Land where teams play high quality football and also win all games while using players from the youth system.

Perhaps Roman feels that Pep Guardiola is that manager and can convince him to take the reins instead of going to Manchester City or Manchester United. Maybe he was disturbed by Jose’s post-match comments after the defeat against Leicester when he said he felt ‘betrayed’ by his players and that he had lost control of the dressing room. Whatever the reason, an upgrade on Jose Mourinho will be very hard to come by.

The man who’s going to take charge, as interim manager, is Guus Hiddink who has been Roman’s go-to man before. He is hardly someone who you’d bank upon to take your team to the very top. Perhaps Roman had Pep or Diego Simeone lined up but they hardly seem like a better option than Jose.

By sacking Jose, Roman has ruined any chance he’d ever have of creating a legacy at Chelsea similar to Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. Despite all the Chosen One barbs aimed at Moyes, Mourinho was Chelsea’s Chosen One and by sacking him they’ve seriously missed a trick.

Even the old master had shown his support for Jose, saying: “I think, knowing Jose Mourinho and the one thing I always admired about him and his team, they always play for him, they always try, so the ingredients are correct. He just has to find the solution to get his team back on track and I think he'll do it."

Given time Jose would have done it, but sadly there was no Bobby Charlton to support him. Given Jose’s pedigree, there’s absolutely no doubt that he would have turned it around and ensured Chelsea would’ve kept on producing high football. After all it was only a year ago, when Chelsea were picking up the Premier League title by comfortably thwarting every other team in the league.

I am sure most Chelsea fans would agree that Roman missed a trick by sacking Jose right now. The truth is that there aren’t many better managers than him, and it’d be interesting to see how Pep Guardiola copes if he comes here and sees that unlike Germany or Spain, the other teams aren’t willing to lie down when the going gets tough.

In their official statement, Chelsea said: “The club wishes to make clear José leaves us on good terms and will always remain a much-loved, respected and significant figure at Chelsea. His legacy at Stamford Bridge and in England has long been guaranteed and he will always be warmly welcomed back to Stamford Bridge.”

It looks unlikely, that he will ever come back. And that’s a sad day for anyone who loves football.
