Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against holding IPL matches in Jaipur amidst growing water crisis, the Rajasthan High Court on Thursday served notices to the state government, Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), asking them to respond on April 27 with their arguments.

A division bench of acting chief justice Ajay Rastogi and justice DC Somani gave the direction while hearing a plea filed by Mahesh Pareek. In its verbal observation, the court commented that not a single drop of water exists in Ramgarh Dam, adding that the ground water level was depleting day by day in the city.

The plea informed the bench that three matches were shifted to Jaipur due to water crisis in Maharashtra, arguing that the crisis was worse in the state and hence the matches should not be held. It also referred about the state water policy that gives priority to humans for using water.

The petition points out that public struggles to get enough water in summer in Jaipur, which falls entirely under dark zone. And, the government has not been able to provide enough water supply to the public. Despite this, the government is using nearly 3 lakh litres water per day that is being wasted to maintain the stadium and if the matches are held, then it will go up to 80 lakh litres.
