Italian tennis player Fabio Fognini crashed to a 7-6, 6-4 loss to World No 553 Wang Chuhan in the first round and also made an insulting gesture to fans in the process.

Fognini was apparently heckled by the crowd throughout the match which probably led to him losing his cool and react in an angry manner.

The ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) have taken immediate action against the Italian and have fined him $2,000 for his outburst.

Fognini had earlier smashed his racket on court and also apparently shoved Chuhan with his elbow at the end of the game.

Chuhan who side-stepped questions about the controversy had this to say: "This match has really, most importantly, helped me get closer to this kind of feeling of competing with top-100 players. Hopefully, next time when I meet a top-100 player, I won't feel so nervous or feel that it's impossible to win."

Fognini, who is no stranger to on court outburts had earlier made headlines during Wimbledon 2014 when he threatened to 'smash' his racket on official Wayne McEwen during a first round tie.

Fognini was apparently upset that his first round tie at Wimbledon was not scheduled at one of the main courts and had also lambasted the tournament and its tradition.
