Mumbai Indians’s domination in the 10 edition of Indian Premier League continued as they notched up their sixth win (fourth at home) on the trot. And this time it came against Delhi Daredevils at their fortress Wankhede Stadium on Saturday, in a low scoring tie.

The Rohit Sharma-led side won by 14 runs.

It was Mumbai’s death bowling that came to the fore once again. Having reduced Delhi, chasing 143 to win, to 24/6, the hosts choked their opponents and did not let their batsmen score freely after recovering well from an earlier collapse.

The seventh wicket stand for 91 runs put up Kagiso Rabada (44) and Chris Morris went in vain as the visitors were restricted to 128 for seven in 20 overs, 14 behind Mumbai’s 142.

Earlier, the Mumbai fast bowlers blew away the Delhi top order on a track that supported good pace and bounce. After Delhi opener Aditya Tare ran himself out in the first over itself, the next six batsmen fell like nine pins, one after another.

New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClanaghan sent back the in-form Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer and the dangerous Corey Anderson, before Jaspreet Bumrah got the scalp of the dangerous Rishabh Pant for a nought. While seamer Hardik Pandya brought them down to 24 for six, after dismissing Karun Nair cheaply, making the task tougher for the next batsmen to come.

Put into bat first by Delhi, the Mumbai batting failed to put up a strong show with the bat for the first time in the tournament. Their big hitters were seen struggling against a disciplined Delhi bowling led by Zaheer Khan.

Had there not been some crucial cameos from Joss Buttler (26) in the beginning, Kieron Pollard (26) in the middle followed by Hardik Pandya (23) at death, Mumbai would have struggled to go beyond the 140-run mark.

Carrying on his fine form from the previous game, Buttler was dominating from the word go. He went after the fast bowlers, going by his instinct which got him a few edges off Chris Morris to the boundaries after opener Parthiv Patel was dismissed cheaply by Kagiso Rabada.

When everything was going fine, a bad call from Nitish Rana saw Mumbai lose the big wicket of Buttler while going for a cheeky single. Sanju Samson’s brilliant direct throw found the English batsman well short of his crease.

A while later the in-form Rana, too, fell early to Pat Cummins’s short ball. The struggling Rohit Sharma was quick to follow him, once again to a leg-spinner, but this time it was Amit Mishra. The Mumbai captain went for a slog sweep to a length ball but could not connect it well thus ball landing straight to backward square leg fielder Cummins for five.

A situation came where the big man Pollard had to curb his instincts and deal in ones and twos apart from chipping in with odd boundaries. Just when he looked set at the crease, he went for a big hoick against Cummins but failed to time it as the ball easily landed into the safe hands of Samson.

Later, Hardik played a responsible knock at the end to guide the team to a competitive total.
