In the January 22 edition, dna reported that Abhay Singh Chautala-led group is all set to sweep the upcoming Indian Olympic Association’s elections slated on February 9 and his ouster from the Olympic family will only be an eyewash as he will continue to rule the body through his cronies.
On Saturday, the last day of filing nominations, it became clear that Squash Federation of India’s president Narayana Ramachandran and Rajiv Mehta, president of the Uttarakhand Olympic Association, will be announced elected unopposed after scrutiny of papers.
Apart from the vice-presidents’ post, all other Chautala group supporters would be declared elected unopposed. Even for eight vice-president posts, Anurag Thakur, Akhilesh Das Gupta, Janardhan Singh Gehlot, GS Mander, RK Anand, S Tarlochan Singh, Birendra Prasad Baisya, Parminder Singh Dhindsa are sure to be elected as Rajlaxmi Singh Deo, who is wife of Colonel CP Singh Deo, is not likely to be a challenge to anyone.
Dr Virendra D Nanavati is lone candidate for the senior vice-president’s post. While the All India Tennis Association president Anil Khanna will be the next treasurer.
In order to pacify Randhir Singh group, his daughter Sunaina Kumari would be one of the six joint secretaries going to be elected unopposed.
The other two candidates Randhir was fighting for — Mukesh Kumar (president of the Judo Federation of India) and Raninder Singh (president of National Rifle Association of India) — would be nominated as the Executive Council Members.
There is complete silence over Raninder’s name who has always been seen as strong critic of Chautala. “He (Raninder) is head of an important federation and his presence will make the IOA stronger. It’s is not about any compromise, rather it’s all about running sports well in India,” said a senior member of the Chautala-group on condition of anonymity.
India’s return to Olympic family would only be a matter of time after Feb. 9 as all the demands put forward by International Olympic Committee have now been implemented.
