Mr. Consistent of Indian cricket team, Cheteshwar Pujara couldn't convert his 15th half-century into a hundred on Sunday but his 57-run knock was enough to break Gautam Gambhir's eight-year-old record.

The Saurashtra lad overtook Gambhir's tally of 1269 runs to claim the Indian record of most runs scored in a single season. Coming in to bat at No. 3, Pujara needed only four runs to surpass the left-hander, who had set the feat in the 2008-09 season, and he did that in style garnering a boundary courtesy a beautiful cover drive.

Pujara kept his focus intact en route his half-century but was out after tea with Nathon Lyon producing a classical off-break, flight and turn which he gloved to Peter Handscomb at forward short leg. Pujara played some glorious on-drives using his feet against both O'keefe and Lyon. The half-century came up with a whip through the mid-wicket region as he reaffirmed his status of being India's best batsman in the current series.
