Despite Australia's lead being swelled to 298, Kumble still believes India have a shot at pulling off a miracle in the fourth innings.
After a near-flawless home season of nine Tests so far, India head coach Anil Kumble said the hosts were bound to have a bad day at the office like they did against the Australians on Friday.
However, he added that it was frustrating to see the team not consolidating from when they were in control at 94/3.
"You are bound to have one bad day. It was disappointing. We were in a pretty decent position when (KL) Rahul and Ajinkya (Rahane) were batting out there. But once Rahul got out, we lost those four wickets in five or six balls. That certainty pushed us back," he said.
The former India captain put the collapse down to the inability of the Indian batters to adapt to the conditions.
"It's a surface where you needed to adapt. We didn't adapt really well. A couple of batsmen are bound to fail, having been scoring exceptionally well. Virat (Kohli) and (Cheteshwar) Pujara got out cheaply, and so did (Murali) Vijay. Once Rahul and Ajinkya had that partnership of 50, that's when we could have consolidated and got closer to the target or probably even got a lead," he said.
He also rued the dropped catches by the Indian fielders in the second innings, which meant Australia captain Steve Smith is still out in the middle.
"We dropped a few catches. It has hurt us in the past, especially in this game you need to hold your chances even if it's half chances. We dropped Steve Smith on a couple of occasions. That has certainly pushed us back," he said.
Despite Australia's lead being swelled to 298, Kumble still believes India have a shot at pulling off a miracle in the fourth innings.
"We would like to restrict them to as little as possible. Hopefully, tomorrow (Saturday) morning we can pick up a few early wickets and then put the pressure back on them," Kumble said.
"I still feel there's a lot of cricket to be played in this Test match," he added.
