Australia have seized the advantage with a commanding show on Day 1 of the third Test, posting 299/4. While Steve Smith (117*) and Glenn Maxwell (82*) were the star performers, opener Matt Renshaw gave the team a good start in the company of David Warner.

Renshaw made 44 before falling to Umesh Yadav, edging to first slip Virat Kohli. Renshaw said at the end of the day on Thursday that “if Australia win the first session on Friday, we will go a long way in winning the Test match”.

The tall left-handed opener said that the pitch “played pretty well”. He was hopeful that the pitch will stay the same way throughout the Test match. He added: “The pitch looks like it is slow and might break with a few foot marks.”

Captain Smith was coming into the Test under a lot of pressure following the DRS controversy in the last match. Renshaw said that “Smith handled the whole situation really well. We are here for a cricket series."

Renshaw said that Maxwell “played some good cricket shots today and showed that he could play well. He is a class player and showed that he could do it in Test cricket.”

Renshaw, in his first season in Test cricket, said that he had not played much with Maxwell and hence was not in a position to say if his slow approach – 82 not out in 147 deliveries – was slow or normal. “I am not sure if it was normal or different but he was pretty calm and relaxed and showed he could play well in Test cricket.”

About his own knock, he said that he got a bit lucky in the first six overs when he scored all his runs in fours. “I bat the same way every time. I had a lot of preparation coming in to this Test and stuck to the plans,”
