Indians reigned supreme at the World Youth Chess Championship, which concluded at Maribor in Slovenia on Sunday. India shared honours with Russia to finish atop as the power houses bagged eight medals each including three gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

For India, Chennai’s R Vaishali and M Mahalakshmi became world champions in the girls under-12 and under-14 category, respectively, while N Priyanka emerged winner in the under-10 section.

In the boys under-14 section, Madurai’s Aravindh Chithambaram, who was leading by a full point, lost to an American opponent to settle for silver. In under-16, Girish Koushik of Mysore won a silver medal with a last round victory.

Chennai’s Monnisha and Riya Savant bagged the bronze in the girls under-14 and under-12 categories, respectively, while Trichy’s LN Ram Aravind finished third in the boys’ under-10 section.
