Despite the Indian Super League (ISL) having completed two seasons, the fortunes of Indian football is yet to see a change for the better. With the country languishing 162th in the FIFA rankings, things don't seem to be too rosy.
With the tournament lasting a little more than a month, those participating in the league have called for it to be played for a longer duration in order to have better impact. Sharing the same line of thought is India goalkeeper Subrata Paul.

The 29-year-old DSK Shivajian custodian praised the league but in the same breath asked for more. "If the Indian Super League is extended and made it like any other football league across the world, football will certainly benefit," said Paul here on Sunday.

Brazilian legend Zico was also among those who were vocal about the league regarding it's duration and impact when it came to improving the standard of football in the country. The FC Goa coach had said that once the ISL winds up, there is no infrastructure for local footballers and thus, very little benefit for Indian football.

India finished bottom in their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying group with just three points in eight games. They may have won the 2015 SAFF Championship in January this year but Paul said there is a long way to go.

"We are passing through a transition phase where senior players like Baichung Bhutia and Climax Lawrence. Sunil Chhetri and me are the highest capped players. Now the average age of team is around 24. This bunch is talented but needs a couple of years to blossom. I am sure you will see a different India team in next five years. ISL will be the biggest contributor," he added.
