The Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) has made up its mind to surrender before the International Boxing Association (IABA) and the sports ministry.

Taking a giant step towards sorting out issues with the sports ministry, the IABF has replied to the government within the stipulated 15-day deadline given at the time of suspension. Not just this, the IABF has also submitted a draft to the IABA for its approval where it has agreed to make several amendments in its constitution as per the international body’s demand.

This has come after a high-level meeting attended by the four top IABF functionaries last week. Suspended IABF secretary Rajesh Bhandari told DNA that if the draft is approved by IABA, then the AGM will be called for to make necessary amendments in the constitution.

However, there is still confusion over the continuation of outgoing president Abhay Singh Chautala as chairman, a post that was specially been created for him in the last general house meeting in September.

Bhandari said IABF has already given notice for the special general body meeting, which could be called for anytime in January 2013. “We’re awaiting AIBA’s reply on our draft. As Christmas holidays are on in Europe, we’re expecting the reply anytime in January. As soon as it comes, we’ll hold our AGM and amend the constitution as per our parent body directives to resolve this issue,” Bhandari said on Monday.

On the issue of Chautala continuing as chairman, Bhandari said that neither AIBA nor the government has raised objections about his name. “There are issues regarding the conduct of our last elections. We’re ready to hold fresh elections to meet the directives of both AIBA and the government. The post of chairman was created by the general house as per the norms of constitution and no one has raised objections about it so far,” he added.

However, a senior sports ministry official rejected outright Bhandari’s take on the chairman’s issue and cited the letter where government has asked IABF to clarify whether Chautala had voting right or not?

“If the chairman has voting right, then it’s a clear violation of the government’s Sports Code. If it’s just an ornamental post without any voting right, then we’ve no objections whatsoever,” the official stated.
