Looks like Gautam Gambhir is all set to make his comeback to the Test squad for the ongoing series with New Zealand.

According to a report by India Today, Captain of India Blue has been called as a backup opener to replace injured KL Rahul for the second Test in Kolkata, starting September 30. The report says the request comes from coach Anil Kumble.

KL Rahul pulled his right hamstring during the second innings in the 500th Test. He was dismissed at 38 and later was substituted on the field by 12th man Shikhar Dhawan.

The report also says that Gambhir is likely to go under a fitness test at National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

If BCCI is looking for a replacement, it could mean that Rahul's injury is more than just a 'slight niggle in hamstring.'

Gambhir has played 56 Test with an average of 42.58 to score 4046 runs. He scored 94 and 36 against India Red in the recently concluded Duleep Trophy final. He guided India Blue to victory.
