The demonetization move has hit a lot of people and that includes Indian cricket team Captain Virat Kohli. The Delhi lad was as taken by surprise as anyone else when the Prime Minister announced last week that 500 and 1,000 rupee notes would no longer be legal tender.

Kohli was caught unawares when he momentarily forgot that his cash in hand was worthless while paying his hotel bill.

"I was actually going to pay my hotel bill in Rajkot and I was taking out the old money and I forgot that it was not of any use anymore. I could have actually signed on it and given it to people, it is actually that useless now," Kohli said, on the eve of the second Test to be played between India and England in Visakhapatnam.

The 28-year-old was all praise for the move, calling it "unbelievable". "For me, it is the greatest move that I have seen in the history of Indian politics. By far, hands down. I have been so impressed by it, it's unbelievable what's happened," he added.

The demonetization has also affected the visiting England team. "The moment it was announced I felt helpless. All my Indian money had turned into trash. Can you imagine being in a foreign country, penniless? Luckily, my hotel in Rajkot was kind enough to exchange the old notes and I did not have to stand in the queue," said a visiting English fan.

The game itself has been hit by the move too. The Vizag Test match is likely to hit badly by the demonetization move. Despite hosting its first ever Test match, there was little buzz outside the stadium, unlike for most international games. Only a few English tourists were to be spotted in the short ticket queue.

"The sale of tickets is as not as expected. Obviously, people focus on more important things than watching a Test match or a movie when cash in hand is short," said an official at the VCA.
