India stand a chance to finish in podium only in discus: Anju Bobby George

Winning medals in discus throw would be the only bright patch for the Indians, said Anju Bobby George as the athletics team set off for Glasgow to participate in the Commonwealth Games, which begins on July 27.

"It'd be in discus where India stand a chance of making it to the podium as all the top athletes from the Commonwealth countries will descend in Glasgow, making it a very competitive outing in the largest city in Scotland," said the former Indian long jump champion while talking to dna from Bangalore.

"In all, there are three athletes in discus. Vikas Gowda is the lone male athlete while Seema Punia and Krishna Poonia form the women's team. I don't see any medals in track events.

"We did commendably well at home, and we are proud of it, but I feel the top athletes did not turn up for the Delhi edition of the championship, and we made most of it, but it will be not the same, in Glasgow."

Of the team selection, Anju, who who made history by winning bronze medal in long jump at the 2003 World Championships in Paris, observed: "I am surprised Tintu Luka, who was gunning for medal at the Olympics in 800m is not competing in the event. The people concerned and the athlete are the best judges and might have their own reasons.

"It is sad that we do not find the men's 4x100m relay team because of injury and we do not have any replacement for those injured. This is sad," said Anju.
