India scored 369 for the loss of five wickets off 97 overs in reply to Australia's 517 for seven declared in the first Test at Adelaide on Thursday.
Day Three belonged to India's debutant captain Virat Kohli, who scored 115 of 184 deliveries to take his side to a comfortable position against hosts Australia. India, however, needs a further 149 runs to overtake Australia. Kohli scored his seventh century in his 30th Test, which was his first as a Test captain.
At draw of stumps, Rohit Sharma (33 of 61 deliveries) and wicketkeeper-bastman Wriddhiman Saha (1 off 16 deliveries) were at the crease, and will resume batting for India on Friday. For Australia, left arm fast bowler Mitchell Johnson and off-spinner Nathan Lyon claimed two wickets each, while Ryan Harris finished with a wicket too.
For India, apart from Kohli, the other players who put on a good show were Murali Vijay (53 of 88 deliveries), Cheteshwar Pujara (73 of 135 deliveries) and Ajinkya Rahane (62 of 76 deliveries). Shikhar Dhawan scored 25 of 36 deliveries.
