The opening act of this India-Australia series was a typically fascinating Test cricket's day, one which neither team could boast of completely winning.

While India reduced Australia to 256/9 on an already dry and crumbling pitch, the visitors showed some grit in the first session and were boosted by the late assault from Mitchell Starc with No. 11 Josh Hazlewood at the other end.

Australia gave a decent account of themselves in playing the turning ball, especially the top four, which left even India batting coach Sanjay Bangar a bit surprised.

"They applied themselves really well," Bangar said of the visiting batsmen on Thursday. "You could see that they were working hard, they were trusting their defence, using their feet quite a bit, (showing) all facets of good batsmanship against spin bowling. We could see that against our spinners today (Thursday)."

The former India all-rounder added that they India were hoping to bowl out the Aussies under 230 after having them on the mat at 205/9.

"We would have been very happy had we batted in the evening. All credit to Starc because he came out and backed himself and played those shots. Because of that partnership they were able to end the day in a good position. I think we were expecting them to be bowled out around 230 or less than that. But they applied themselves," he said.

Even Renshaw reckoned they had a good day in the office despite losing nine wickets.

"I think we had a really good day, the fact that we had the 50-run partnership at the end of the innings. We talked about how the top order needs to score runs, but especially the tail needs to hang on and get some bonus runs. I think we've had a great day and it's a good confidence builder (for the rest of the series)," he said.
