England's hopes of salvaging some pride and taking the flight back home in the early hours of Wednesday with smiles on their faces are fast evaporating.

Alastair Cook and Co. were getting sunburnt on the field in the December heat of Chennai for nearly 14 hours that began after Tea on Day 2 and ended in the dying moments of Day 4 of the fifth Test here.

Yet, their coach Trevor Bayliss was confident of England batting all day to save the Test and avoiding going back home for Christmas with an embarrassing 0-4 loss.

"As confident as I can be," the 52-year-old Australian said on Tuesday when asked how confident he was that England could save the Test, needing another 270 to avoid innings defeat. "They are in a pretty good place. One thing I would say about these guys is the seven Tests they have just played (including two in Bangladesh) have shown their character. We have been in a tough position in the seven Tests and have come out and played well the next day. We are out there to win this – the last couple of Test matches – so they don't want to get on the plane with a loss. They want to play out the day."

Bayliss credited the Indian team for the mammoth total. "I think most of them have gone through days like that and probably won't be the last time they'll go through it. It's never easy when it happens. You've got to give credit to the Indian team and their batters, they played extremely well. We just weren't in the game today," he said.

Bayliss criticised his team's poor fielding with catches going abegging. "The ground fielding is better than the home summer. Our catching is still below par. I think the last three catches we dropped cost us 500. That's disappointing, something that we should keep working on. Yes, on this tour we have been outclassed (by India).

"Any Test team in the world wants to be the best team and certainly that's no different for the English team. But certainly we have a long way to get there. In the sub-continent, we are not the first team to struggle here, we won't be the last. But actually over the last seven Tests, we have debuted five new younger players and most of the players haven't been here before. I think they will benefit from this down the line. Experience will help in going forward in all forms of the game. Even at home, being in tough situations and learning from those situations. Maybe learning a little bit from the Indian players how they go about things. Just learn from your own coaches and own players."
