Rafael Nadal on the other hand had a much easier outing against Richard Gasquet who he pounded 6-4 7-6(1) 6-2.
The Spaniard lost his serve which had been untouched prior to this match in the second set to the Frenchman but his level of tennis was too superior for Gasquet who had defeated David Ferrer to overcome in the semi-final.
The US Open final on Monday will like the women's final on Sunday see the top players clash for the title. Djokovic and Nadal are World No1 and No2 respectively just like Serena Williams who is women's No1 and Victoria Azarenka her challenger who is No2.
The final showdown between Nadal and Djokovic will be the third in four years at the US Open. In 2010, Nadal won the title and in 2011, Djokovic went on to lift the trophy. This third meeting at Flushing Meadows in the final will be the duos record 37th meeting and 6th meeting a Grand Slam final.
World No2 Nadal has a 21-0 hard court record this season and is seeking his 13th Grand Slam title while top seed Djokovic who is also defending his No1 ranking from his rival is seeking his 7th Grand Slam title.
Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are Australian Open and French Open champions respectively and will be seeking their second Grand Slam title of the year with this win.
