The law of averages finally caught up with Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis. After an unbeaten run together that fetched them three back-to-back titles and World No. 1 ranking, the Indo-Swiss pair were handed a shock first-round defeat at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Wednesday.
The loss is the pair's first in a competitive game, and it was handed by first-time pairing of Petra Martic and Stephanie Vogt, who pulled it off in straight sets to win 6-3 6-3.
Martic and Vogt have never played with each other and have just a single Women's Tennis Association (WTA) doubles title between them.
Sania and Martina had won successive titles at Indian Wells, Miami and Charleston, a feat that helped Sania create history by becoming the first female Indian tennis player to achieve the World No. 1 rank in doubles.
According to reports, Martina was not completely fit during the match was treated for a back injury.
