According to a report in an English daily, ex-cricketer and politician Imran Khan, who has divorced his wife Reham, might have been the victim of a murder plot.

Incredibly, the report claims, it might have been his wife Reham, who wanted to slow poison Khan in order to take over the reins of his political legacy.

The two are yet to divulge reasons for parting ways, fuelling a barrage of speculative reports about the divorce. But Pakistani journalist Arif Nizami has claimed he has intelligence sources which show that Reham planned to poison Khan, which led to the breakdown of their marriage.

"Intelligence agencies conveyed to Imran through his close friends that Reham's intentions were not right. It was feared she could poison Imran to grab his party's reigns," Nizami told Pakistan's News 24 channel.

Imran Khan is the head of a popular political party called Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).  Nizami is well known for sniffing out scoops, reports the English daily, so his claims may hold water. Nizami had broken the story about Imran and Reham's marriage in December 2014 as well as the divorce last month. In September, he said the couple had reached a point of no return and were about to part ways.

He also said that Reham had made Imran's life 'hell' and that the divorce was not by mutual consent. According to Nizami, Reham had a reputation for beating up her ex-husbands, and she also hit Imran Khan.  Nizami told the channel the couple fought bitterly two days before the divorce was announced after Reham told Imran she would tell him how to run his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). He said Imran then sent Reham to London on the pretext of attending a conference, and then emailed her the divorce notice much to her shock.

However, according to Dawn.com, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has said that Reham Khan had not hit Imran Khan.

Shahid Masood, another Pakistani journalist, claims that Imran's sister had tried to dissaude him from marrying Reham, but to no avail. Masood also claims that a 'non-political personality' and an ex-officer of 'an institution' involved in surveillance had asked Imran not to marry Reham. "He contacted Reham as well and told her Imran is a popular leader whom she should stay away from," he said.

Reham had apparently lied about her previous marriage and the domestic violence involved in it. She had also faked her degree. When these revelations happened, her marriage to Imran began to break down. "Her relation with Imran was based on lies and fraud. She kept Imran in the dark about her past life and falsely claimed her ex-husband use to beat her," said Nizami.

Reham Khan has also been accused of taking money from PTI leaders to finance a film she was making.

Imran was earlier married to Jemima Goldsmith, and they divorced in 2004.
